Having Hot Water Trouble? Read This

It is easy to stay out of hot water everywhere but in the bathroom. If you are finding nothing but lukewarm or cold water when you turn the hot water faucet, there are some things that you should check first before you race out to call a plumber or run off to buy a whole new hot water heater. These are all simple things that even a person who is not at all handy can quickly, easily and safely check.

Is the Hot Water Going Somewhere Else?

The most obvious cause for a hot water failure is that it has all been used already. Have you washed dishes, or has someone taken a very long shower in the last few minutes? If so, wait for half an hour and then see if the water gets hot. If the answer is yes, then you just have to wait for the tank to fill back up. If this is a frequent issue, you might need a larger water heaterto keep up with the needs of your household.

Check for Frozen Pipes

If you wake up on a winter morning to find no hot water, you may have frozen pipes. Usually, the hot water pipe is the last to freeze, so it is likely that the frozen area is on the supply side of the pipe. This may be something your utility company needs to take care of.

Is There a Blockage?

If none of your other pipes are frozen, it could be a blockage or a water supply issue. Call your water supplier and see if there are any known water leaks in your area, as this can greatly reduce available water pressure until it is repaired.

Check for Mechanical Malfunction

Also, inspect the water heater itself. If you see a lot of water pooled around the bottom, there might be an issue with the tank. Before you buy a new tank, there are parts that can be replaced by someone with basic tools and skills.

The water heater is a central component of your home’s function. It provides hot water for bathing, showering, washing dishes, and washing clothes. For some homes, it even helps heat the home itself. If you have discovered a problem, do not attempt to fix it yourself because you might accidentally make the problem worse. While professionals may seem expensive, they make a big difference in the long-term health of your home.
