How to Pack Up and Store Your Stuff Before Remodelling

If you do want to go ahead with a remodel in preparation for moving, there are a lot of items that you need to get out of the way first. The contractors who enter your home will need all furniture and personal items out of the rooms in which they'll be working so that they’re able to work without damaging your things.

To make sure that they have plenty of room to do their job, you should make sure that you pack up all of your possessions and move them to a secure location. Here are a couple of tips to make the process easier.

When you're getting ready to have your house remodeled, take some time to get rid of things that you no longer use.

For instance, if you're planning on finishing your basement, get rid of the gym equipment that you haven't used in years. You can sell it online, donate it, or give it to a friend. If it's been packed away for years, then you'll never miss it. You can also put some items in a storage unit if you want to keep them but don't want them in the way while contractors are working on your home.

When you're deciding what to put in storage and what to get rid of, there are a couple of general rules that you can follow. For clothing, if you didn't wear it within the last year, then this is a good indicator that you won't want it later. The same is true for kitchen gadgets and dishes. For furniture, ask yourself if you really enjoy having a piece. It's common to gather too many knick-knacks and lamps, too.

Store Valuables Securely

When you're packing, make sure that you store valuable items in a location that’s locked and hidden. You'll have many people in and out of your house, and there will be times when your house isn't locked. Take the time to put jewelry and valuable mementos in a place that the workers will not need to enter. You might want to purchase a lock box or a small safe for this.

Keep Things You'll Need in a Convenient Location

There are some items that you need to have near. For example, if your bathroom is being remodeled, you'll still need your toothbrush every day. You'll also want changes of clothing. Make sure you have the things you need in a centralized location so that you're not wondering why you can't find your hairbrush.

Whenever you're remodeling, you need to be organized to make it go smoothly. Organize your things so that you can find what you need without having too much clutter in the way of the contractors.
