The kitchen is a special area of the house where families spend most of their time bonding. If you have one of those kitchens with a dining room as an extension, the hours spent there are even longer. But over time, bright, familiar surroundings tend to start feeling a little...stale. Here are a few little things that you can do to spice up your kitchen and dining space with minimal effort.

Get out your paintbrush

If you are craving a change of scene but don’t have the budget for a full remodel, think about repainting the kitchen cabinets. Choose a color that will complement the general color schemebut somehow still pop. In addition to repainting the cabinetry, you can choose one wall as an accent and repaint it to a shade that will make the general design really stand out. For example, if your kitchen walls are light gray, go a few shades darker on the accent wall for cool, dramatic effect.

Hang a pendant light

It’s hard to go wrong with pendant lights. All the colors and textures that are part of your kitchen look cool because of the way light illuminates them. When you update your lighting, you can showcase the most beautiful elements of your kitchen in a new light (literally). Try experimenting with pendant lights of a color that accents your color scheme, especially if there is a part of the kitchen which hosts the dinner table. For example, if your walls are white, try pendant lights in blue or green. If bright colors aren’t your style, you can alsotry a new shape or texture.

Change your countertops

The most common countertop materials in the kitchen today arequartz, granite, and marble. If you found one material on your counters when you moved in and you didn’t like it, now is the time for a refresh. New countertops are, all things considered, a fairly small change, but they leave a big impression; you will feel like your kitchen underwent a full redesign! New counters make an especially dramatic difference if your previous counters were outdated, worn, stained, etc.

These are just a few ideas on how you can spice up your kitchen space without having to go over the budget. The most important part of an upgrade is to get the best quality appliances and supplies and to have a competent and experienced contractor to handle the project for you.
