However, occasionally our health needs a little boost to ensure maximum protection, especially if our immune system isn’t working properly. In fact, according to ASEA, as many as 50 million Americans suffer from an autoimmune disease. While you may not be able to control when you get sick, there are a few things that you can do to help your immune system out.

Eat Healthily

Make sure you are getting all the nutrients that you need. Plan balanced meals from the traditional food pyramid of the five main groups, including healthy fats, carbohydrates, protein, fruits and vegetables, and dairy products. Nutrition experts oftenrecommend the American Heart Association diet. Low fat, moderate carbohydrates, and plenty of fruits and veggies help to keep the body working effectively. Although some people turn to sweets, tobacco, or alcohol when stressed, reach for an apple or a low-calorie snack instead.

Many doctors suggest gettingseven to nine hours of sleep each night. Avoid distractions by turning off the television or radio. Keep the bedroom dark and comfortably cool. Some sleep experts suggest wearing socks to bed on cold nights, as they help to keep body heat from escaping through the feet. An occasional afternoon nap of between fifteen and thirty minutes can supplement nightly sleep if needed.

Manage Stress

Although stress is unavoidable, and some are actually good for motivating us, it is important to keep bad stress in check. Maintain a positive attitude when possible. Make a point of getting along with others as the situation permits. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation or prayer, have also been shownto help relieve stress.

If you aren’t already active, begin a low-intensity exercise routine. Walk, ride a bike, or swim for five to ten minutes at a time to build up your endurance. If you already have health problems, talk to your doctor about what you can do that won’t hurt you. As you build a tolerance for physical activity, gradually increase the amount of time, you spend doing it without overexerting yourself.

Enjoy Leisure

Make time tosavor your favorite pastimes. These may include reading, watching television or movies, or woodworking. Enjoying fun activities will help you to relax and escape the day's stresses. Keep social media to a minimum, as several hours daily has been reported to increase stress rather than decrease it.

While you may not notice the effect immediately, taking care of your body in all areas will help you become more resistant to disease than you would be otherwise. Make sure to keep a balance in your life.
