5 Home Maintenance Tasks You Shouldn't Forget

Owning a home is not just about paying the mortgage each month. There is also a great deal of responsibility and upkeep. The following five maintenance tasks are very important, and you may be overlooking them.

Close Gaps

Every home has gaps and cracks, even newer ones. These spaces that form around windows, doors and the foundation are entry points for pests, and they could be costing you quite a bit of money in utilities. You can seal most of them with caulk, but larger holes may require the use of foam. If it is a problem with the foundation, you may need to call in professionals. Inspect your home annually for gaps that could be increasing your utilities and get them closed up.

Clean the Roof

You may not think about cleaning your roof, but this is important. Cleaning your roof will allow you to notice little problems before they become big problems, which can save you a lot of money. It will also remove the unsightly black stainsleft behind by algae and moss. When cleaning your roof, you should also make sure that you clean out your gutters and the edges of your roof. Leaves and dirt build up in this area, and this can cause some pretty serious problems when it rains. You should check your roof at least once a year, if not more often.

Keep Pests Out

It doesn’t matter how nice your house is; if you get pests inside it can be very uncomfortable. Pests are particularly common in areas with heat and humidity year-round. It’s important to keep food and other things that attract pests cleaned up and in containers. You should also get your home inspected for bugs regularly, especially if you see signs of pests. They can do a lot of damage if you don’t catch the problem early on.

Clean Ducts and Change Filters

The furnace keeps your home warm and toasty during the winter months, but it will work less efficiently if you do not change the filter a few times per year. A furnace filter traps particles and dirt to prevent them from damaging the unit. Also, you should have the ductwork in your home professionally inspected and cleaned at least once per year to patch leaks and remove unwanted material. This will keep your home cleaner and your energy bills lower.

Regular Inspection

Along with pests, plumbing and ducts, you should also inspect your home inside and out for any signs of cosmetic or water damage. Taking a quick look around every 30 dayscan save you a great deal of money later. This doesn’t need to be an in-depth inspection. Just check your furnace room, and the major plumbing areas, like your bathroom, laundry room, and kitchen to make sure there aren’t signs of water damage.

Your home is one of the biggest investments you will ever make, and you want it to stay nice. These maintenance tasks may not be on your radar normally, but if you keep up with them, you will have fewer problems with your home.
