Choosing Exterior Paint Colours

Thankfully, we live in an older neighbourhood (note: author lives in the East York are of Toronto) with no homeowners association dictating exterior paint colours with rules or regulations.  That's usually a good thing until your neighbour paints their home a shade of purple that garners more jeers than cheers.
Under Pressure: Maybe it puts a lot of pressure on homeowners, but unlike interior colours, exterior paint choices affect the entire street. To make your home an attractive standout, consider not only your house but the adjacent homes or structures too. Consider the brick, roofing, siding, existing paint colours, landscaping, and hardscaping as a whole.
Aim to choose a complementary palette built around the elements that are hardest to change or over which you have no control; surfaces such as shingles, siding, stonework, pathways, driveways that will remain in place, especially if they are not yours to control.
Pick 3! There are three essential elements to your colour scheme: a dominate field colour; an accent colour which brings life and energy to doors, shutters and smaller surfaces, like trim, railings, roof edging, window and door casings and other trim work.
Your trim should be in strong contrast to your field colour to produce a sharp, dramatic effect. Bold accent colours can easily go overboard. A door painted bright chartreuse, or an exotic mango colour can add an exciting punch, but not so much when carried over onto shutters or gables.
Look to design websites for ideas.  Exterior painting is more time-consuming and complex than painting an interior room. Look for inspirations online. Buy sample sized paints then paint test patches to ensure you get the colour right the first time. Build your opinion of your new palette based on observations made at varying times, in the differing lights day.
I hope these tips help you to pick some standout colors that appease the eye and add value to your home.
