Save Money On Your Spring Gardens.

Spring is sprung, and it's time to start planting this year's gardens. Growing your vegetables and flowers can save you big bucks, but other gardening costs can leech away the financial benefits.

I’ve got these tips to help you save on everything your green thumb requires.

Rise & Shine!  When it comes to shopping, the best selection at local garden centers will be found both early in the season and early in the day. Postpone on planning and planting, and you're likely to find poor quality specimens at peak season prices.

Purchase Plants In Packs:  Whenever possible by vegetable starters and flowers in packs of four or more. While this may mean buying smaller plants, you'll get more for your money, and they will grow to the size of the larger ones in a matter of weeks.
Mind Your Water Usage: Installing a sprinkler or soaker hose on a battery operated digital timer can help prevent soaring summer water bills. These investment items will save you many times their cost on your water bill. Early in the cooler season, less watering is more; let those root systems work to get established.

DIY: Use a shallow plastic deli container set about 5-10 feet from your sprinkler as a gauge to see how much water your garden is getting. Your lawn only needs about 1½” every week, vegetable and flower gardens 2”-2½”, divided into multiple watering sessions.

Invest In A Multitasking Tool:  A fabulous garden doesn't need a shed full of expensive tools.  Many in the know recommend a Hori Hori knife as the only tool you need; a combination serrated edge knife and trowel you can use it to dig, sculpt, weed, plant bulbs, and take cuttings. Easy to handle and clean, this $25-$60 investment can be found at most of our East York hardware stores and makes a great gift!

Happy gardening!
