Tips For Spotless Decks & Patios

The exterior condition of your home can add or detract from its value just as the interior does. You can enhance your "curb appeal," with spotless decks, patios, and walkways.
Like indoor flooring, decks, patios, and stone or concrete walkways will benefit from regular cleaning. Don't sweat it; no weekly vacuuming required. A once yearly scrubbing will keep these assets looking their best for years to come.

#1 Get Swept Away  - Wet surfaces hold twigs, leaves and other debris. Sweep away everything you can while your patio or deck is dry, you’ll save yourself some time down the road.

#2 Protect Your Plants - Plants are not fond of harsh soap. Cover plants with drop cloths or hose them down with water before you begin cleaning, and any residual soapy spray will drip off.
#3 Good & Wet - Thoroughly water down surfaces before applying cleaning solutions to avoid chemical staining. Don’t let the cleaning solutions dry on surfaces. Always read the directions before starting.
#4 Treat The Stains - How you do will depend on the grime and type of surface you’re cleaning. Visit one of our East York hardware stores to buy an appropriate cleaning solution and, in most cases, a stiff bristle brush for application.
#5 Mop It Up  - Use a cleaning solution appropriate for the surface, diluted according to the directions. Using the mop, or a stiff bristled brush, work up a good lather before rinsing the suds away with a hose.
#6 Avoid The Pressure - While it appears to save time a pressure washer can ruin glazing and the mortar or jointing compound between stones. It can remove painted on stain and damage softer wood on decksand fencing. Test a discreet patch. If used, less pressure is more.
